I am having my first solo show of art photographs, and while looking around at frames, I see that the cheapest (with frame and mat) is somewhere around $30 a piece. Any advice from fellow artists? With a show containing over 30 photos, this could run close to $1000. I just want simple black frames with matting.
make a deal with a local art shop. ask if they will give you a discount in exchange for including their name as a sponsor for the frames. or some other promotion for them.

I’ve seen a lot of artists clip small alligator clips to their prints and then hang them from thumb tacks. Nice DIY aesthetic, doesn’t damage the art, and it don’t get no cheaper.

If you purchase enough of a "stock" frame from a frame shop you can usually get a discount. It’s preferable to show 20 prints properly framed than 30 cheaply framed. You’re name is what will be at stake here as much as your photos.
Someone here on YA said "Quality doesn’t cost it pays" and for this situation I have to agree with it.
Are you selling the photos in this showing, if so you’ll recoup the monies invested.
