James Kalm pedals up to the opening of Inka Essenhighs most recent selection of paintings, The Old New Age. In these works the artist has concentrated on developing a sharp focus depiction of the natural landscape that surrounds her summer studio in Maine. Mingling a fantastic Surrealism with the romantic sublime, forest maddens and spirits in the mist appear to observant viewers. Includes an interview with Inka Essenhigh

illustrative …
illustrative paintings had great importance before there were cameras. then surreality had great meaning before there was computer graphics. it is very beautifully painted, but wish it did more than just showed me a 2d of a 3d “imagi-scape”.

yes, she is taking …
yes, she is taking risks right now, but I do not know that she is succeeding. I almost think that I like the paintings still because she is so pretty. I miss her early flat enamel work. most of the comments about Tooker, magic realism, fantasy art are correct i am afraid. Out of a group the group of these paintings I think a couple in the beginning worked because they were not as illustrated. I will still keep my eye on her and still not only because she is beautiful but cause shes taking risks

She has some unique and appealing ideas, but the color is often too pretty, and there can be a lot of dead space, and they can look very close to fantasy art.

OK stuff, and I …
OK stuff, and I like her technical ability and that she is trying something dramatic, though I don’t think it always works.; but I saw more exciting stuff in the Ugly Betty episode where her boyfriend painted all those mean portraits of her. As an artist I was fascinated by the Betty art.
There is so much space in this gallery that is wasted. Seems that the set up is very bland and dull. Someone said she took risks? LOL. Check out the art revolution – this is art 101 compared to it.
