KENNY’S BIG ADVENTURE 1

Posted by admin on June 10th, 2010 and filed under artists gallery | 17 Comments »

16 artists from Nevada competed to paint the official portrait of Governor Kenny Guinn. None of us got the chance to do the $20,000 portrait. The Nevada Arts Council, with the blessing of the Governor, outsourced the job to all 50 states. They picked this really awesome artist from Washington State. But many Nevadans, me included, think it should have been a state competition, and not a national one. So I decided to take one of my six audition paintings (the one I painted of Governor Kenny) on my own national “porcelan gallery” tour.

Way to represent the people who gave you your job in the first place Kenny! Both times you asked for my vote, I gave it to you. Too bad you wouldn’t give the people of Nevada the benefit of the doubt like we did for you.

Contemporary Art Exhibition RHOES AKIS – FLUX Karaca Gallery Ankara 2002

Posted by admin on June 6th, 2010 and filed under artists gallery | 1 Comment »

This video is by Enver Ozustun (flux member) capturing scenes from the Ankara exhibit at Karaca Gallery.
Professor Atila Ilkyaz ( heart of this concept) John Lindus English flux artist along with the director of gallery talk about the works.
It was unfortunate that we had problems with the Turkish customs and couldn’t transport all works to the show.

About Exhibition
This artistic experiment has been inspired by others of this kind and it is being realised through dialogue with the mayor of Karlovassi Mr. Limberis and the need of our municipality to come closer to the visual arts.

The concept of this exhibition is based on ,,the world of changes”.
Fire changes into water and earth in turn…without the one contrary the other would not exist, and without contraries the cosmos would not exist (Heraklitus).
The natural phenomena, the energy sources, movement towards the liquid element of our existence, which stimulates the senses and thoughts for our personal research, creating skeptical images with consciously or unconsciously permeate through the artistic procedure of the artistic praxis.

The aim of this exhibition is to develop and stimulate creative thought and a spirit of collaboration between the public and artists of our island that will open a crossroad of exchange that unites our need for communication and entertainment along with an open cross-cultural dialoge on life, joy and sadness as the destiny of each one of usin the world of changes.
The participating artists come from Greece, Germany, England, Italy, Australia and the US. Others live in Greece and others between their native lands dedicated to their art, at times unsupported or ignored by the polity. Our guest scientist Associate Professor Peter Anderson from Canada and our artists colleagues and friends Atila Ilkyaz, Onur Ozmen, Isa Ozdemir, Enver Ozustun from Turkey happened to be occupied with similar thoughts or working on the same concept.

Rhoes -Akis- Flux a deep concept and reflection upon us where transformation is perceived differently from each one of us through our expressive matter: painting, sculpture, printmaking, land art, installations, science and communication, music composition, drama, creative photography, film, video art and literature.
Our subject matter reflects on nature, natural disasters, spirituality and global culture.
Amongst a deeply distracted world of social and political turmoil on current humanitarian issues which have occupied our thoughts and the world: chemical wars, population shifts, natural disasters, the naval tragedy of the Samina Express…,we are uniting here to justify our truth for life and art with ultimate perception and criticism on contemporary art issues.
I would like to express my gratitude towards my colleagues and others for their interest in this event, as without their collective thoughts and generous offer of their art this event could not have taken place.

Wallworks Artist Interview with Leslie Shows

Posted by admin on May 29th, 2010 and filed under artists gallery | No Comments »

Leslie Shows
b. 1977, Juneau, Alaska. (Lives and works in San Francisco)
Constructed through paint and mixed media collage, Leslie Shows work forefronts the geological underpinnings of land formations while turning to the imaginary to visualize the energetic waves, both scientific and metaphysical, that hover around large masses of land and its contiguous relationship with the sky and bodies of water. Recent solo exhibitions were held at Jack Hanley Gallery, New York and ODC Gallery, San Francisco. Group exhibitions include, Artists of Invention: A Century of CCA, Oakland Museum of California, and A Mind Meld is a Terrible Thing to Waste, Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco. She also participated in the 2006 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach and was a 2006 recipient of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art SECA Award.

Visit YBCA to learn more about the Wallworks exhibition. http://www.ybca.org/tickets/production/view.aspx?id=9234

YBCA presents Wallworks the highly anticipated curatorial debut of Betti-Sue Hertz, YBCAs newly appointed Director of Visual Arts. For the exhibition, YBCA commissions local, regional and international artists to use the literal aspects of YBCAs architectural space, built in 1993 by acclaimed architect Fumihiko Maki, as a starting point to create new large-scale works directly on the walls of both its galleries and its public spaces.

Wallworks artists crisscross between the visual and tactile qualities of the material that they use, and their interface with an audience conceived in the manner of a skeptic. Drawing the vast encyclopedia of signs inwards, their visualizations are subjective readings of spatial contingencies, as if groping around in the dark for glimmers of what is to come next.
