I am writing a essay on what deters teenagers from visiting museums, galleries and museums in the UK. If you could answer with your views on what mainly deters you from visiting? and what you would go to museums, galleries and historic sites for? for example day trips with the family or friends? school projects? what would pull you there? Is interactive media an incentive?

Well unless your a dork we only like museums if they are interactive and have things we can muck around with. Films i.e imax and 3D is always good because its interesting. Simulations are fun to. We don’t like standing there reading huge blocks of text.

I’m flying to New York City in a few weeks, and am just wondering—with all the art galleries there—which ones are worth visiting?

I don’t know about galleries, but if you like art there are many museums on the must see list including the Metropolitan, the Guggenheim, MOMA, the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum, Museum of American Folk Art. That should get you started.

I’m thinking about getting a little more cultured, and want to know what are some of the most interesting galleries at the Art Institute of Chicago are, like the Roman or Egyptian gallery? Could anyone tell me what some are, and what pieces of works I could find in them? Before I make the trip to Chicago..

You may have heard the phrase, "I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like." The same goes for those who do know about art and is the reason for any difficulty in answering your question. You see, I don’t know much about art, and I don’t know what you like …. so even if I said that the small room off the Roman gallery to the right was the most interesting, you might completely disagree. I did read in a novel that you could impress people by saying something like, "Well, of course everyone wants to see the Mona Lisa, but did you notice that exceptionally fine work by Inventaname in the corner of the third floor left?"

My advice would be to look up the gallery on Google and check out reviews of exhibitions, then choose your time to visit so you can see their normal stock and a visiting exhibition too. You might get some useful info from the blogosphere too. Between that and Google images you could even save yourself a trip!

Do art galleries purchase photos from amateur photographers?

I don’t want to walk in my local art gallery expecting to make business if they stick to professionals.
In fact, where do galleries get all of their art from? Do they buy it, or are things donated? Or a combination of both?

Get some business cards made up or a5 folded cards which you can print some of your images on.
Traipse around to the galleries in your area and enquire about exhibiting or displaying there.
Do not be pushy and if they want to see your book (portfolio) then arrange for a time convenient to the gallery manager/owner to do so.

Yes, galleries will display and sell anything from anyone if they think they can sell it or if it will get people through the door.

Only the major art galleries and museus will have works donated.
