Hirokazu Kosaka, a multi-disciplinary artist and Buddhist priest based in Los Angeles, performs the Hatsuya (first arrow) kyudo (zen archery) ceremony to celebrate the opening of the renovated Asian Art Galleries at IMA.

    Actually the idea of holding kai for 5-10 seconds is a modern practice to teach important lessons and allow the teacher to see ‘you’ better. once kai is ‘mastered’ the need to wait past ripeness is no longer needed unless the time is needed for the shot to ripen.

    more like some kind of “meigen” ritual.
    Don’t know what ryu-ha.
    Still, nice to shoot in order to open an even
    like that.
    As far as the Japanese making a joke of their
    culture… I’ve seen enough gaijin come over
    and make themselves silly too…
    there are a 120 some millon Japanese..
    which ones are you talking about ?

    it’s shinto kyudo, “one life, one arrow”, so not federation kyudo.

    It is the Japanese who are making a joke of their own culture. Kozaka San should learn how to do proper kyudo and the meaning of kai!
