Where are the modern, cutting edge, trendy galleries and art shops in New York City?

I’m in Manhattan and looking specifically for galleries or stores that sell art that are considered avante-garde, trendy, classy and modern.

Soho is still the neighborhood where you can find affordable (relatively) cool stuff. Chelsea is where you can find the serious art galleries with new artists and high prices. Pick up a Time Out or New York Magazine and check the listings.
