James Kalm makes a pilgrimage to west Chelsea and takes in a viewing of recent paintings by New York icon Ron Gorchov. In a career that spans nearly fifty years, Gorchov has perused his vision of pure painting. With his unique touch and innovative intuition the artist has developed an unmistakable form that combines the pictorial with the sculptural. His saddle shaped canvases transcend the novelty of the gimmick and miraculously acquire a universal correctness that is timeless in its elegance.

In another dimension the saddle may appear in the shape of a line, or even as a faint haze. Just thought I’d add that. Something worth thinking about in the shifting presence of this the excellent work!
As much as Anton …
As much as Anton Henning uses the frame as a part of the artwork in its own right, Ron Gorchov uses the stretcher, but in a much more impressive and potent way. No one has ever done that before, and that’s what I call art.

His knowledge of art, his personality and his vision all seem to work together. There is alignment of who he is and a respect for who he is not. He knows himself. He knows art.
His use of technique and materials are perfect for his vision and intention.

Sush a mastery of color reminds me of a Brazilian modernist who used to work with the ancient technique of the tempera on canvas. His name was Alfredo Volpi (died in 1980 but had his high point in the 50′s and 60′s). If such comparisons are any valid…

When Ron had a studio in soho around 1994 i knocked on his door by accident thinking it was a gallery showing his work. He answered the door and I explained my interest in his work and he said we should talk more over lunch at the bistro next to his studio. I was a student at Pratt and his openness and the great lunch that followed including a studio visit was one of the highlights of my time in New York. a great man and great artist. His unique approach is very much like the man himself.
