Nicole Eisenman New Paintings at LEO KOENING INC

James Kalm makes a pre-Halloween visit to bring viewers some tricks and treats from the painterly grab bag of Nicole Eisenman. Combining styles and techniques, Eisenman presents a series of large Beer Garden paintings that capture friends and inhabitants of this bohemian milieu. The pictures are rife with art historical references and show Eisenmans regard for past masters like Picasso, Nolde and Ensor.

James Kalm Brings viewers a brief tour of “Monumental Piccolini”, a provocative show highlighting current abstraction by contrasting the ambitious scale of classic “New York School” works with the more modest productions of contemporary practitioners. One of the contentions of curator Jennifer Riley was that, due to market forces, monumental works are being ignored by galleries. It’s hoped that by creating a dialog between works, scales and generations the sphere of formalist abstraction will display its vibrancy. Includes interviews with Craig Fisher and Jennifer Riley

Piero Manzoni A Retrospective at GAGOSIAN GALLERY

James Kalm slips in five minutes before closing and goes on the LD (Low-Down) to bring viewers a brisk walk-through tour of this historic Manzoni Retrospective at Gagosian Gallery. Piero Manzoni is perhaps one of the most influential proto conceptualists. This exhibition places his groundbreaking work in a chronological context with other artists like Yves Klein, Alberto Burri and Willem de Kooning. Probably best know for his Artists (Merda dartista) and Base of the World Manzoni died at age 30. Because of the tight security and a strict no-photo polocy at the gallery no commentary was possible. Audio was provided by an interview with Roy Basnett on 105.9 FM, The Voice of Liverpool broadcast March 16, 2009. For purposes on this interview, the persona of Loren Munk was adopted.

Scott Richter New Work at ELIZABETH HARRIS GALLERY

Scott Richter is an artist who has been pushing the limits and ideas of paint and painting for decades. After investigating the process of painting and the mingling of it with elements of sculpture, this show displays a returning to the classic rectangle hung on a wall. Richter’s canvases are luscious, physical and nuanced, with an undeniable presence that is satisfyingly memorable. Includes an interview with Scott Richter.

On this “Artsy” Mission, Jolene takes you to the Corcoran Gallery Of Art in Washington DC.

The DC Arts Commission hosts Art Salons every month, and the Corcoran was hosting a Salon this past October.

Jolene received a special invitation from the DC Arts Commission to film the event!

While she was there, she interviewed Artist Brandon Hill, which you’ll remember from a past Jolene Goes Artsy.

Brandon was there exhibiting his artwork, including some pieces he had to create with other artists.

The group artwork had to match the style of the current Exhibitions at the Corcoran Art Gallery, which were Seargant and the Sea, and Edward Burtynsky.

These great Salons get together Art minded folks from the VA, MD and DC Area!

The President of the Corcoran Art Gallery and Art School spoke, including many people from the DC Commission. These were on loud speaker, and in a big hall. The audio didn’t turn out all that great, so it’s not included, but it was so great to see all these people!

The Arts are Alive and Well in Washington DC!

Seeking to uphold Sargents notion of the necessity of dialogue in an artistic community, DCCAH will be hosting its monthly Art Salon at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. On October 29, join visual artists Brandon Hill, Aniekan Udofia, Tim Conlon and Chanel Compton along with musicians Maureen Andary and Kev. O as they react and interact with the Corcorans two current exhibits, Sargent and the Sea and Edward Burtynsky: Oil. This months Art Salon will be curated by Peter Chang and Shyree Mezick. All artists will be contributing original music and pieces of work to this Art Salon, a juxtaposition of the old and new that you don’t want to miss!
