Peter Young: 1963-1977 Paintings, at PS1

Posted by admin on June 14th, 2010 and filed under young gallery | 4 Comments »

James Kalm continues his presentation of exhibits from PS1 with this feature on the works of Peter Young. Young (b.1940, Pittsburgh) was a member of the generation involved with developing a new approach to the practice of painting after it was declared dead by the Minimalist and Conceptual artists. This show documents the pictures that gained him attention and lead to exhibitions with such prestigious galleries as Dick Bellamy’s Oil and Steel Gallery, and Leo Castelli. Young’s attachment to the counter-culture led to his departure from the New York art scene, in the early 70’s, making this display a rare opportunity to see these works. Curated by Alanna Heiss and the PARC Foundation Director David Deutsch.

Monumental Piccolini at LA VIOLA GALLERY

James Kalm Brings viewers a brief tour of “Monumental Piccolini”, a provocative show highlighting current abstraction by contrasting the ambitious scale of classic “New York School” works with the more modest productions of contemporary practitioners. One of the contentions of curator Jennifer Riley was that, due to market forces, monumental works are being ignored by galleries. It’s hoped that by creating a dialog between works, scales and generations the sphere of formalist abstraction will display its vibrancy. Includes interviews with Craig Fisher and Jennifer Riley

New York Art Tours: Gordon Matta-Clark & Rirkrit Tiravanija

Posted by admin on April 21st, 2010 and filed under artist gallery | 4 Comments »

What’s going on New York’s world of art? Who are the artists everyone’s talking about? Merrily Kerr, your personal art critic and guide, answers these questions and more in her video reviews of New York’s hottest art gallery shows.

Gordon Matta-Clark & Rirkrit Tiravanija, at David Zwirner March 2007. This month, the exhibition mostly likely to get people talking earns its ‘hottest show’ tag by literally applying the heat to gallery visitors. As part of an installation, daily vats of feisty Thai curry are prepared, to which visitors can help themselves. Dealers, critics and art world luminaries have been spotted indulging in a spicy lunch at tables and chairs scattered around a plywood structure which replicates 303 Gallery’s space in Soho, where the piece was first exhibited in 1992. Tiravanija reveals his indebtedness to Gordon Matta-Clark’s precedent-setting café, ‘Food’ and his unconventional use of real estate by sharing the gallery space with a recreation of Matta-Clark’s ‘Open House’ a sculpture made in a dumpster which coincidently occupied the same SoHo address as Tiravanija’s exhibition when it was created in 1972.

Piero Manzoni is perhaps one of the most influential proto conceptualists. This exhibition places his groundbreaking work in a chronological context with other artists like Yves Klein, Alberto Burri and Willem de Kooning. Probably best know for his Artists (Merda dartista) and Base of the World Manzoni died at age 30. Because of the tight security and a strict no-photo polocy at the gallery no commentary was possible. Audio was provided by an interview with Roy Basnett on 105.9 FM, The Voice of Liverpool broadcast March 16, 2009. For purposes on this interview, the persona of Loren Munk was adopted.

Lady GaGa Visits An Art Gallery In Paris

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010 and filed under artist gallery | 12 Comments »

Lady Gaga (born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta; March 28, 1986) is an American recording artist. Lady Gaga began performing in the rock music scene of New York City’s Lower East Side. She soon signed with Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records, upon its establishment in 2007. During her early time at Interscope, she worked as a songwriter for fellow label artists and captured the attention of Akon, who recognized her vocal abilities, and had her also sign to his own label, Kon Live Distribution.
Her debut album, The Fame, was released in August, 2008. In addition to receiving generally positive reviews, it went number-one in four countries, and topped the Billboard Top Electronic Albums chart in the United States. Its first two singles,”Just Dance” and “Poker Face”, co-written and co-produced with RedOne, became international number-one hits, and the album later earned a total of six Grammy Award nominations and won awards for Best Electronic/Dance Album and Best Dance Recording. In early 2009, after having opened for New Kids on the Block and the Pussycat Dolls, she embarked on her first headlining tour, The Fame Ball Tour. By the end of 2009, she released her second studio album The Fame Monster, with the global chart-topping lead single “Bad Romance”, as well as having embarked on her second headlining tour of the year, The Monster Ball Tour.
Lady Gaga is inspired by glam rock musicians such as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, as well as pop music artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson. She has also stated fashion is a source of inspiration for her songwriting and performances. For example, critics have pointed out the heavy influence she’s got from Junko Shimada, a Paris-based Japanese designer.[1]
To date, she has sold over eight million albums and 35 million singles digitally worldwide.
The Fame Monster (stylized as The Fame Mons†er) is the second studio album by American recording artist Lady Gaga, released on November 18, 2009. The album’s eight songs were initially intended to be part of a re-release of Gaga’s debut album The Fame. However, Lady Gaga announced that the new songs would be available as a stand alone album, as she thought the re-release was too expensive and that, as the piece represents a separate conceptual and musical body of work, it does not need the songs of The Fame to support it. A Super Deluxe Fame Monster pack containing the two releases was released on December 15, 2009.
The album deals with the darker side of fame, as experienced by Lady Gaga over the course of 20082009 while travelling around the world, and are expressed through a monster metaphor. Gaga compared the feel of her debut album and The Fame Monster with the Yin and yang concept. Cover artwork was done by Hedi Slimane and has a gothic look which Gaga had to convince her record company to allow her to shoot. The composition takes its inspiration from Gothic music and fashion shows. Contemporary critics gave a positive review of the album, with the majority of them complimenting the songs “Bad Romance” and “Dance in the Dark”.
In some countries the album charted together with The Fame while in others like the United States, Canada and Japan, it charted as a separate album. It has reached top ten in most of the major markets. “Bad Romance” was released as the album’s first single. It topped the Canadian, United Kingdom and Irish charts while reaching the top ten in United States, Australia and Sweden. Lady Gaga announced The Monster Ball Tour supporting the album, which started on November 27, 2009 and will continue through June 2010.
