James Kalm continues his presentation of exhibits from PS1 with this feature on the works of Peter Young. Young (b.1940, Pittsburgh) was a member of the generation involved with developing a new approach to the practice of painting after it was declared dead by the Minimalist and Conceptual artists. This show documents the pictures that gained him attention and lead to exhibitions with such prestigious galleries as Dick Bellamy’s Oil and Steel Gallery, and Leo Castelli. Young’s attachment to the counter-culture led to his departure from the New York art scene, in the early 70′s, making this display a rare opportunity to see these works. Curated by Alanna Heiss and the PARC Foundation Director David Deutsch.

I remember in around 1966 when he was painting some of those works and some earlier ones remained in his studio at 94 Bowery. His studio was next door to a Martial Arts Theater just off Canal Street. He was a talented fellow and a nice guy. He was still married to Twyla Tharp. John Scull is an old friend. I love the painting he picked. Thanks for for the show James!
